Leeds Carnegie Ladies 0-1 Arsenal Ladies
A Rachel Yankey goal after 15 minutes was the only goal that separated Leeds Carnegie Ladies and Arsenal Ladies in an entertaining Women’s National Premier League tie at Throstle Nest.
Hosts Leeds entered the game as league leaders, but with Arsenal only one point behind it was always going to be a close affair.
Leeds will consider themselves unlucky not to have taken at least a point from the game however, especially in the first half as first Olivia Thackray then Ellen White missed the few chances that had been created.
Even unluckier was Steph Houghton, who’s rasping shot was tipped onto the underside of her bar by Arsenal keeper Emma Byrne, with no Leeds player able to follow up.
But Leeds were unable to convert their chances, and now sit one place behind Arsenal, level on points with Chelsea, whom they face next week.
“I was very proud of all the players today,” said Leeds manager Rick Passmoor. “This was always going to be a tester, and so it proved.
“In years past, we’d have folded and lost by three, four or more goals, but you can see the difference in the team and the way they’ve progressed this season.
“They deserved the applause of the crowd as they came off today, and I think that this is a good sign of things to come for women’s football in the city.
