Leeds Carnegie Ladies 1-0 Millwall Lionesses
Leeds held on to their slender lead at the top of the Women’s National Premier League when they beat Millwall Lionesses 1-0 at Throstle Nest.
Two weeks ago, Leeds had travelled south for the reverse fixture and come away with a 4-0 victory, but found Millwall a much tougher proposition on home turf.
Both teams struggled to make the best of the blustery conditions, which meant it wasn’t until the 67th minute that Leeds made the breakthrough, when Jade Moore burst into the 18-yard box and fed Cantrell. Her shot was well saved by Millwall keeper Lacey, but the rebound fell favourably to Jess Clarke, who turned the ball onto her right foot and slotted home from two yards out.
The goal woke up both Leeds and the crowd, with two shots in as many minutes afterwards, but Millwall were in no mood to suffer the same result as last time, and always looked capable of getting an equaliser.
Fortunately for Leeds it never came, and while they will take the three points, a hamstring injury to influential midfielder Sue Smith will be a big cause for worry, with a local derby against Doncaster mid-week and visits from Chelsea and Arsenal to come later in the month.
