Arsenal Ladies 3-0 Leeds Carnegie Ladies

Having secured the league title last Sunday, Arsenal were free to play the flowing, attractive football little in evidence this season, allowing them to punish a lacklustre Leeds performance.

Arsenal signalled their intent as early as the tenth minute, when Kim Little was allowed time to turn in the Leeds box and fire home. Despite piling the pressure on the Leeds goal, however, it wasn’t until the 71st minute that they got their second, a Little penalty following a Sophie Walton foul.

Despite manager Rick Passmoor returning to the technical area, having started the game on the stand, Leeds were still having difficulty in troubling Arsenal keeper Emma Byrne, and after spurning several good chances, they confirmed the win with a goal from Gemma Davison four minutes from time.

“It’s a disappointing end to the season,” said Passmoor. In front of the biggest crowd of the season, our friends and families, we put on a poor showing.

“If someone had offered us fourth place, our highest points total and a major cup win, of course we’d have taken it. But the difference between where we’ll end up and where we could have is so small, it makes us realise how close we came.

“Nevertheless, I’m very proud of all the players for what they’ve achieved and for the way everyone at the club has pulled together after the funding and Super League issues.”
